Riding & Loving Horses
Valerie Mellema has been riding horses since she was 5 years old. Her mother showed Missouri Fox Trotters and Valerie inherited her love horses. She started riding her Paint pony as a child, upgrading to larger horses over the years. Each horse has left a lasting impression on her and they all taught her something new about horse care and training.
Valerie attended West Texas A&M University in Canyon, Texas where she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Equine Business & Industry with a Minor in Animal Science. While attending college, she worked for a Hunter/Jumper farm in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma where she furthered her experience in barn management. She also interned at the American Quarter Horse Association in Amarillo, Texas.
Valerie also has experience working with young horses and racehorses. She has a passion for retired racehorses and has also been involved in racing and breeding for racing.
Why Lake Fork Stables?
It has always been Valerie’s dream to have her own farm. Lake Fork Stables became that reality for her in May 2017. Valerie has worked at boarding facilities as well as boarded her horses at multiple barns over the years. She understands the needs of boarders and offers a variety of options to suit their budgets.
Valerie has been caring for horses for the majority of her life. She has studied horsemanship, nutrition, feeds & equine reproduction and has a Bacherlor’s Degree in Equine Business & Industry.
Lake Fork Stables features a 6 stall barn with iFeed automatic feeders, automatic water & lighted outdoor arena. Automatic feeding can be set up for pasture board horses as well. All pastures have water troughs with floats to ensure fresh, clean water at all times.
Because we are a small barn, you don’t have the drama that comes with a large show barn and tons of boarders.
We have teamed up with Double H Horseshoeing owner, Ralph Hampton, to provide our horses with the best hoof care around. Ralph trims our horses on a regular 6 week schedule.
